During high school I chose to learn Spanish since it is the most widely spoken language apart from English. During my time volunteering at the hospital I have witnessed multiple patients in need of Spanish speaking interpreters. This language barrer made it difficult for both patients and doctors to discuss treatment, diagnosis, and instructions. Learning Spanish has helped me appreciate communication and has shown me the importance of understanding not just the patient but their culture. When physicians, nurses, and health care workers know Spanish, it helps build trust and a sense of safety between the patient and their care team. By learning Spanish, I am slowly beginning to understand patients and what they need. Observing and learning Spanish has allowed me to fully understand the importance of patient care and recognition, since understanding a person can directly help them receive a higher quality of care.
