How being part of a competitive cheer team inspired my career in medicine

Being a part of competitive cheer has played a major role in shaping my hope to pursue a career in medicine. On these teams, success is achieved not only by individual effort, but through the whole team’s trust in each other and our ability to perform under pressure. In competitive sports, like cheer, your ability to adapt, communicate, and trust in your team is what ultimately leads you to success. Competitive environments have taught me resilience and discipline as I learned to cope with both failures and successes. These environments mirror the competitive aspects of medicine and the way that each individual person is trusted to do their job. Because of my time on competitive teams, like aerial arts and cheer, I have learned that I thrive in a high pressure environment where the stakes are high, making a career in medicine the natural and most meaningful path for me.
